Chapter 7 - a straight bankruptcy for people with large amounts of unsecured debt, such as credit cards or medical bills. After selling off your non-exempt assets, the bankruptcy court discharges most or all of your debts, letting you start over with a clean slate. The vast majority of Chapter 7 bankruptcies are "no-asset" bankruptcies, meaning that you will not have to sell any of your assets in order to receive a discharge of debt.

Chapter 13 - with an adjustment of debts through a Chapter 13 wage earner's plan, you can pay off your bills over time while still retaining your possessions. Chapter 13 can even help you save your home if you are in foreclosure.
